More than 60 local legal professionals joined keynote speakers to welcome in the start of the legal year for Ballarat's first Legal Laneway Breakfast.

A first for regional Victoria, Ballarat & Grampians Community Legal Service, in partnership with Victoria Law Foundation and the Ballarat & District Law Association hosted the morning event in "Hop Lane".

We were thrilled to partner with the Victoria Law Foundation to host the inaugural Ballarat Legal Laneway Breakfast. We look forward to making it an annual event to launch the start of each legal year.

- Adrian Tinetti, Lawyer Ballarat & Grampians Community Legal Service

Originating 20 years ago the Legal Laneway Breakfast started as a secular event marking the opening of the legal year in Melbourne’s CBD. It was also a more accessible gathering for women and primary caregivers in the law. The Ballarat event featured speeches from Ballarat & Grampians Community Legal Service Lawyer Adrian Tinetti, Program Coordinator for Women and Mentoring Emily Murphy, and Victoria Law Foundation Executive Director Lynne Haultain.

Lynne Haultain said that after two years of running the event online “the lessons we learned from shifting to an online event during the pandemic revealed the appetite for more activity in regional Victoria.”

“Live-streaming the Melbourne event and hosting our first regional event continues to improve access to these important events. In the spirit of the first event 20 years ago, we’ll continue to adapt to meet the changing needs of the legal community” Haultain said.

In its 20th year, Melbourne’s Legal Laneway Breakfast featured the inside word from Attorney General Jaclyn Symes MP and Legal Services Board CEO and Commissioner Fiona McLeay. The event also hosted a discussion between her Honour Justice Jacinta Forbes and Jacob Varghese, CEO of Maurice Blackburn Lawyers, on balancing caring responsibilities with a career in law. For those unable to attend in-person, the event was livestreamed and available to watch online.

Thank you to all who came by in Ballarat or joined us online for our Legal Laneway Breakfast!
